People will be heading out onto the highways this long weekend to see other loved ones and have Thanksgiving dinners.

With that in mind, RCMP would also like motorists to get to their destinations safely.

The highways will be congested throughout the weekend so Sheriff and RCMP traffic officers will be out on the roads for Operation Impact, watching out the impaired and distracted drivers, speeders, and those not wearing their seatbelts.

In 2015, there were four deaths and 68 injuries out on the roads, so RCMP are hoping to make people think twice before taking any sort of risk behind the wheel.

"We are reminding Albertans that not everyone has the Thanksgiving weekend off, including traffic safety officers who'll be out trying to make sure everyone get where they are going safely," said Inspector Steve Daley.

The patrols will be taking place starting Friday, October 7, until Monday, October 10.

Motorists are also advised to keep an eye out for farming equipment, cyclists, pedestrians and other motorists.
