On Tuesday (May 2), Statistics Canada revealed the amount of money Canadians spent on alcohol in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2016.

We hit the streets to find out how much Airdrie thought Canadians had spent at the liquor store.

"Probably millions. A couple million, five million," guessed Jasmine, while her friend Nicole guessed seven million.

"It was in the billions. I think it was like six billion," guessed Connie.

Actually, according to Stats Canada, the number was $22.1 billion dollars.

Some Airdronians were amazed by the statistic.

"Yes, that's a lot of alcohol," answered Sonia when asked if she was surprised by the figure.

"Oh my goodness. We have issues," replied Jasmine.

According to Stats Canada, beer is the alcohol of choice for Canadians, with an average of 229 bottles of beer sold per person over the legal drinking age. Wine sales also grew, with 24 bottles of win sold per person over the legal drinking age.
