Did you feel the earth move under your feet early Thursday morning? (July 6th).

Some in Airdrie and across southern Alberta certainly did just after midnight. That was the result of a 5.8 Magnitude quake that hit western montana.

Camille Brillon, seismologist with Earthquakes Canada says the rumblings could be felt a long ways from the epicentre.

"The earthquake was actually felt in Alberta and as far as New Westminster, BC. The USGS has reports all the way out to 1000 kilometres it was felt."

The quake hit just outside the small town of Lincoln, Montana, but Brillon says you could feel a tiny bit of motion in the Calgary area.

"They would have felt a little rumble, and that's probably about it."

Thankfully, Lincoln suffered minor damage, but earthquakes like this aren't uncommon for that area.

"There has been 16 earthquakes in the last hundred years within 300 kilometres of this event," says Brillon, "Just a message that earthquakes do happen everywhere and you should be aware of that and be prepared"
