A little used section of Main Street will be closed for much of this week starting today (September 18).

(Photo Courtesy: City of Airdrie)Ryan Couillard, Municipal Engineering Technologist with the City of Airdrie, explained a commercial development in that area is doing some deep servicing and putting in sanitary sewer, storm sewer and water service utilities on the east side of Main Street south of Home Depot and Harvey's. As a result, a section of the road will need to be closed.

"For the first two days of work that they're going to be doing, there will be three lanes that are closed and one lane that will remain open," said Couillard. "To keep traffic moving for those first couple of days, they're going to install a temporary traffic signal, and that's going to regulate the traffic through those first couple of days. The last couple of days, they're going to open up those first two lanes of traffic, so single direction traffic north and south on that, and then they're going to complete their work with the remaining two lanes."

Couillard explained that the project is being done now so that it will be completed before the long anticipated opening of 40th Avenue increases traffic in that area.

"We wanted to make sure that they had this completed before 40th Avenue opens up. We hate to have that kind of interruption, you know, open up that road that everybody's been waiting for and then close down three lanes of traffic once it's open."

The road closure is scheduled to last until Friday (September 22), but Couillard said that could always change.

"It's all weather dependent, so if we start getting a lot of rain and things start getting delayed on other sites and things of that nature it could potentially be pushed back, but it's five days of work regardless of when they start."
