A female cyclist was attacked by a bear on Canmore's Lowline Trail on Wednesday, July 20th.

Upon arrival, EMS found a woman suffering from serious soft tissues injuries to her upper torso, resulting in internal injury.

"At this point officers are investigating, they are on scene, and they have closed the Lowline Trail," said Brendan Cox, Public Affairs Officer with Alberta Fish and Wildlife.

The bear was scared away by a friend she was with, who was able to deploy bear spray. The cyclists then managed to ride to an area where they were able to call for help.

STARS air ambulance was initially put on standby, but was then cancelled by EMS.

The woman was taken to Canmore General Hospital in stable, non life-threatening condition.

This incident comes just two days after a 25-year-old woman was attacked by a grizzly in the M.D. of Bighorn.

"They are awaiting an opportunity to do a more formal interview with the victim, and after that we should have a clearer picture of exactly what happened," said Cox.

Reports initially suggested that the bear involved in Wednesday's attack was a brown bear, but as Cox explains, it would have most likely been a black bear.

"Here in Alberta, when people say brown bear, they are either talking about a black bear that has a bit lighter fur or they are talking about a grizzly bear."

Fish & Wildlife are attributing the increased number of incidents to a large amount of berries in the mountains this season.
