Many students will be going back to school after the long weekend, and that means school zones will soon be in effect.

"The number one issue in September is always the same: We want to keep our kids safe," said Mayor Peter Brown, "So, reminder that school zones are in effect and drive the speed limit or less and make sure that everyone gets to work safely and everybody gets to school safely."

Even though not all schools are back on September 5, all school zones will take effect on that day. Cst. Dan Martin with the RCMP said it's important that drivers are following posted limits.

"Most of our schools are in 30 zones already but we do have some schools that are along 60 zones, so we ask the public to respect the signs now and follow the rules of the road."

Officer Maury Karch with Municipal Enforcement said drivers should plan to take a little more time to get around once the school year starts.

"You have to be patient. Kids are excited to get to school, parents are excited to get their kids to school, and just be patient because some of these streets are now going to be quite clogged with vehicles."

Karch said Municipal Enforcement and RCMP will be patrolling school zones throughout the Fall to make sure drivers are complying and students are safe.
