Thousands of Airdrie and area students and their teachers and bus drivers will have a serious case of butterflies in their stomachs today (September 4) as school begins for another term in the Rocky View Division.

As everyone heads back, Airdrie RCMP and Municipal Enforcement Officers will keep their watchful eyes on school zones to ensure everyone makes it back safely.

Motorists will experience far more traffic around schools than they have for the past couple of months and because of that, officers say you need to give yourself additional time.

They also want to remind you of the following rules:

  • School zone speed limits will be strictly enforced
  • U-turns in school zones are illegal and carry a fine of up to $233
  • Stopping, parking or impeding traffic on a roadway in school zones can carry a fine of up to $155.  DO NOT stop in the middle of the street to let your kids out of your vehicle
  • Failing to yield to a pedestrian can lead to a fine of $776
  • Parking within five metres of a stop sign carries a fine of $78
  • Distracted driving can lead to a fine of $287 and three demerit points

Parking a distance away from schools and using the sidewalk or paths to walk will alleviate some of the congestion and potential chaos in front of schools.

The RCMP and ME officers remind everyone to slow down, take your time and drive with caution to make sure everyone arrives at their destination safely.
