With the opening of a new school in the community of Hillcrest, some necessary changes were made to school boundaries n Airdrie.

The areas being affected the most in the city are in the southwest quadrant.

Throughout the process, parents made it very clear that the safety of their children while walking to school needed to be at the forefront of the board's decision.

Board Char Todd Brand says they looked at the main roads and believe the plan they have put in place will be the safest route for children.

"one of the things we heard from the presentation was obvious that there are two major roads, of course, 8th and 40th. We want to try and make sure we don't have kids crossing the streets when they don't need too. We did have consultations and through the public advice we were able to look at another alternative that we had not considered before, this will allow certain students closer to the Windsong heights school stay going to that school and this plan will prevent students from using one of the busier intersections. "

Brand says the reason they go to the public is that they are the ones living in those communities and can often come up with really good suggestions on how to improve their general ideas.

"There is never a perfect way to do these boundaries revisions but I think we have done the best we can with this situation."

Based on student enrolment projections and feedback from community members the board approved the following accommodation plan.

  • Students residing in the communities of Prarie Springs, Windsong, and the portion of South Windsong located north and along Windford Drive SW and Windrow Link SW will be designated to Windsong Heights School.
  • Students residing in the communities of Hillcrest, Southpoint, and new families to RVS who reside in the community of South Windsong located south of Windford Drive and Windrow Link SW will be designated to attend the new school in Hillcrest.
  • Students currently attending Windsong Heights, who reside south of Windford Drive and Windrow Link SW, will have the option to remain at Windsong Heights, with transportation provided until 2027or until a new school is open in the South Windsong Community.
  • Students Residing in the communities of Coopers Crossing and Morningside will be designated to attend Cooper's Crossing School (K-5) and the new school in Hillcrest (Grade 6-8)
