It was a tough week for bereaved parents across the country.

Sarah Cormier of Quinns Legacy in Airdrie says she is disappointed after members of parliament voted against an amendment to bill C-86 that would have ensured bereaved parents would have been entitled to 12 weeks of leave following the death of a child.

Cormier says she wasn't completely surprised by the outcome but she is still is in a bit of shock.

"I think we were a little bit prepared just because we had heard from Liberal MPs at Finance Committee that they were not really on board so we were not totally shocked but in some sense, it is still shocking to see every Liberal say no."

Cormier also says it was not what she expected as every political party wants to see families do well.

"I think that's why it got so far was because it was non-partisan and it was something that everyone could get behind because it crossed no political lines and it was in line with every party because every party supports people and those that have suffered hardship."

Bereaved parents everywhere have had the support of Airdrie-Banff MP Blake Richards in the fight for more rights and Cormier says she can't thank him enough.

"It's really emotional to talk about Blakes support.  He's not a bereaved parent but he has completely submerged himself in the bereaved parent's culture and has listened, been empathic and stands behind his words. It's really so hard to thank him."
