He has already touched the hearts of thousands in Airdrie and around the world and he continues his journey back on the ice.

Airdrie’s Ryan Straschnitzki has spent time over the last month learning Sledge Hockey. He recounts the first time he set out on the sledge.

“It was difficult. It’s a hard sport, I enjoyed it. It was fun just being back out there. It’s like growing up, being on the ice, it’s what you love to do and I really enjoyed myself.”

Straschnitzki has already been on the ice four times and can’t wait till the next.

“I’m trying to get on as much as possible and just get better. It’s a huge workout and I think my body is getting used to it.”

Since returning to Airdrie in July, Straschnitzki has spent a long time continuing his recovery and rehabilitation with everything he’s got.

“I’m starting to get into more of a routine and getting faster and faster each day and slowly got physio going. Got some core movement back, I’m starting to work on that a lot, four days a week. Other than that I’m just hanging out.”

One of the best parts of learning Sledge Hockey is the support he’s received from those in the business and his family.

“I’ve been with Chris Cederstrand, he was a former Sledge Hockey Olympian. My family’s been out there, my girlfriend, just everyone who wants to come out and try Sledge Hockey. It’s been fun with everyone out there including my parents and my family members.”

Straschnitzki even joked that his younger brother Connor actually outperformed him one time.

Straschnitzki says he’s also looking forward to the Cowboys N’ Sleds event on September 15 at Winsport in Calgary.

The event features live performances and a game with the proceeds going towards the StrazStrong Foundation and STARS Air Ambulance.
