Last Thursday (March 15th), Rocky View Schools approved their new three year Capital Plan, asking for more schools across the district.

No where is that need felt more than in Airdrie where RVS is doing what they can to keep up with the City’s growth.

“The way that Airdrie’s growing with enrollments in Rocky View Schools, we are in need of a school every year,” says Director of Facility Planning Collete Winter, “We are requesting that a school be approved this year for Airdrie from the Provincial Government and then we’re asking for another school to be approved next year and then one after.”

In their new Capital Plan, RVS will be requesting a K-9 School from the government in 2019, 2020 and 2021. Winter also says they will also ask for a new High School in 2021 as well.

“What’s happening in Airdrie is that the student population is growing by at least 650 students each and every year,” says Winter, “That is the equivalent to basically the capacity of a school. It’s a huge issue.”

While the planning for more schools is a good sign for the growing community, Winter says that they will need help from the City.

“Even if we got approval for our schools, there’s no place to actually put the school, there’s no sites available. We’ve been working with the city and with the developers and just having really good conversations and figuring out what to do.”

Rocky View is also trying to address the growth as they’re requesting two K-9 Schools and one High School for the city in the next couple years.
