When the legalization of Cannabis came to fruition many organizations were forced to change their policies and procedures to tackle Cannabis use.

Superintendent, Greg Lauterbach says Rocky View Schools will be treating the use of cannabis in schools the same as the use of Alcohol.

"Just like everyone in society we are trying to get our heads around what these changes are and really we are taking the approach that even though it is legal for people 18 years or older we are treating it very much like alcohol, regardless of age it is not okay in schools and it says so in our code of conduct."

Lauterbach also says that I the rules for cannabis use in  Rocky View Schools are clear.

"The use and possession or distribution of illicit drugs, alcohol, cannabis that is not allowed on the property and students are not allowed to be under the influence of those whether that be at school events or just at school."

According to Lauterbach, the school does recognize that some teens may experience addictions and the schools are ready to handle that.

"So certainly we talk about addiction in our code of conduct and we talk about what our options are that we don't want the options to only be things like suspensions. At the end of the day that will not change their behaviour so what we have is councillors, access to community resources around drug and alcohol addictions that we can provide students."
