Fire crews from a number of tiny communities worked with others from the big city of Calgary to bring a grass fire near Madden under control on Friday.

Just before 2:30 pm, Rocky View County got a report of a small fire in some trees near the intersection of Township Road 283 and Range Road 43 near Highway 574.  Fire crews from Madden, Bearspaw and Cremona all responded to the blaze.

Before they arrive though, strong winds had whipped up the fire causing it to spread and additional crews from Calgary were dispatched.

Two nearby structures, a house and a barn, were in jeopardy so crews worked to divert the fire away from them.  Those efforts were successful and they were able to start dousing the fire.

The fire had grown to about 10 acres in size and consumed several hay bales before being eventually brought under control around 6:00 pm.

There's no word yet on the cause of the fire but Rocky View County Fire Chief Dax Huba says people need to be very careful with the dry conditions we're currently experiencing.
