Cochrane will have many bikers through town this weekend, all bearing MADD Canada's red ribbon to raise funds and awareness.

The 15th Annual MADD Calgary and Sober Riders Motorcycle Association Motorcycle Poker Run is this Sunday, Aug. 14.

The event starts in South Calgary, and ends at the Historic Cochrane Ranche Site, approximately 100 bikers are expected to participate.

Austin McKay, Chairman of the Sober Riders Calgary Chapter, says impaired riding or driving has far reaching impacts.

"It affects everybody," he says. "Not just the people drinking and driving, but the family afterwards, friends and loved ones who all suffer because of people's decision to get behind the wheel or get on a bike."

He shares the Sober Riders Motorcycle Association's mandate is to ride clean and sober, help others do the same, and promote clean and sober events.

Tracy Franklin, Past President, MADD Calgary Chapter, says all funds raised will go back into the community with different types of programs.

"Some of the money goes to supporting victims of impaired driving," she says. "We have a National Victims Weekend every year, and it's just victims getting together, having a candlelight vigil, it's a very powerful weekend. It gives victims coping strategies and allows them to be with people who have been affected by impaired drivers."

Franklin adds the money is also used for MADD to support police check stops, as well as the creation of a multi-media presentation junior high, and high schools use to caution students on impaired driving.

Registration for the Poker Run begins at 9 a.m. at the Shawnessy Landmark Cinemas Parking Lot.
