You may not know it, but the New Horizon Mall in Rocky View County is open and has been since the summer.

Many Airdrie residents say they have been to the mall, and describe it as a ghost town as only a few stores are actually open.

One resident explains her quick trip to New Horizon with her husband.

“We went in because we saw some cars in the parking lot. We went in and of course as everyone has explained it is a ghost town in there. There was still a sales room, where they’re trying to get some new businesses in there. We essentially walked in, looked around and realized there was nothing there and left.”

She says she was also disappointed that a T&T Supermarket was not there after hearing that it would be a part of the Mega Mall project.

Hundreds on Social Media have also chimed in on the lack of business at New Horizon Mall.

Many have posted to pages such as Airdrie Engaged with various opinions. Many were surprised to find out the mall was open in the first place.

While some are already saying it’s a waste of space and money others post that they’ll give it a chance in the coming months.

The concept of the multicultural mall is similar to the Pacific Mall in Toronto where all the spaces are individually bought and owned instead of rented out from the mall.

The resident we spoke to said that concept was what intrigued her to look at the mall in the first place.

“We were interested in going and checking it out. We’ve heard what it’s supposed to be like. It was intriguing, it’s an intriguing concept, I’ve just never been to one before”

The management of New Horizon said that around 90% of the spaces have been bought and more businesses are expected to roll in.

They will hold a festival as part of a grand opening celebration on October 27th.
