This is a very special week for Sarah and Lee Cormier and their family.

The City of Airdrie has proclaimed August 11th through 18th as Quinn's Legacy Week.  In December 2014, four-month-old Quinn passed away from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).  The week is in honour of her and the grieving families who have lost children.

Sarah Cormier says their little girl was an amazing baby.  "She was a great sleeper right off the hop.  She loved to eat and she was just very special.  Just a very easy going personality.  Just a great addition to our family."

Cormier says having Airdrie proclaim this week in Quinn's honour means the world to their family.  Tonight (August 13) a special kick-off event to the week will be held in front of City Hall as Oranj Fitness, Alive Fitness, and the Quinn's Legacy Run host a Boot Camp starting at 7:00 pm to help people get ready for the 4th Annual Run that goes Saturday, August 18th.

Following the exercise, a candle lighting will be held and the City Hall will be lit up in red, which Cormier calls "Quinn's colour."  It will stay that way for the remainder of the week to honour families who have lost a child to SIDS.

"It's so nice to hear her name and know that she's recognized and part of something that's really big and really outstanding that's happening for her and so many other little babies and children.  It's kind of become a celebration of Quinn for that whole week.  It's so important to us because we don't get a chance to do the first day of school or a wedding or graduation or learning to tie shoes.  Any opportunity that we have to celebrate Quinn we take it, and make it a big deal."

The 4th Annual Quinn's Legacy Run goes Saturday, August 18th, a date that would have been Quinn's fourth birthday and Cormier say they're making the day a celebration.

"We're having cake and all of the fun stuff that comes along with the run.  It's an all-day super fun event after the run or walk."

The event begins at 9:00 am at Monklands Park.

Cormier is especially heartened by the passing of Motion 110 in the House of Commons in June.  The motion brought forward by Banff - Airdrie MP Blake Richards, calls for the Human Resources Committee to study the impact of child loss on parents.

After they lost Quinn, the Cormier's were told by Service Canada that they had to pay back their parental benefits for the time after Quinn's death.  She is grateful that Richards has become such a champion for parents like them.

"It's given us an opportunity to talk about Quinn and share our journey and the struggles, but also the joy.  It's been inspiring to have Blake champion for us and so many families across the country.  It's actually a surreal feeling for us, especially hearing the reading of Motion 110 in the House of Commons and to hear Quinn's name.  It gives me goosebumps every time."

Cormier says ultimately she'd love to see more financial support from the government for grieving parents.

"I know first hand that I was not a good employee upon returning to work so soon after Quinn died.  To be able to receive the bereaved parent portion of the maternity or parental benefits would be ideal.  Some sort of financial support would be wonderful and just a more streamlined system for parents so if they do lose a child they understand the process."

Cormier says having Quinn remembered is the thing that's most important to them, and she feels it's the same for most bereaved families.

"It's the most important thing.  To give a name to these children, that they did live.  That their lives have meaning and value and they're part of our family and of the community."
