This week communities across Canada are celebrating small business week and Airdrie is no exception.

Despite the downturn in the economy, Airdrie continues to see big numbers in small businesses setting up shop.

According to Team Lead for the City's Economic Development, Kent Rupert business just keeps growing.

"Over the last ten years, we've seen our business community grow at about 8 percent, it's really kept up with our residential growth."

Rupert and the Economic team in Airdrie are hoping to look into what makes the city so attractive.

"We're looking at a ten year economic strategy, looking at it from a place making side...why do people move here, why do businesses move here and why do businesses continue to operate here, expand here."

On top of the fast economic growth, Rupert acknowledges that the residential growth of the city will mean other projects need attention.

"It's always a big challenge in a growing city, we need more pools, more parks, we need different amenities so it's trying to balance all the needs and all the dollars."
