A traffic fatality near Crossfield yesterday (December 19) has prompted reminders to drive safely.

Airdrie Rural RCMP and the Airdrie Integrated Traffic Unit, along with EMS, responded to a single vehicle on Highway 2 south of the Township Road 292 overpass. According to EMS, the collision occured just before 3:30pm.

EMS said the collision involved a single vehicle with two occupants. Cpl. Gary Fedrau with the RCMP explained the vehicle left the highway and rolled into an adjacent field.

"A single vehicle had left the roadway, went into the right ditch over an embankment and rolled down into a coulee along the west side of Highway 2."

One occupant of the vehicle, an adult female, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Her next of kin were notified and police are not releasing her name at this time.

A second passenger, also an adult female, was transported by paramedics to Foothills Hospital in stable condition.

Police, along with a reconstruction analyst and the Medical Examiner, remained on scene until about 7:00pm to conduct a full collision analysis in order to determine the cause of the accident.

"At this time it's still under investigation," said Cpl. Fedrau. "Our collision analyst is still looking into the matter. We don't believe speed was a factor, it appears to just be possibly road conditions."

Because of poor road conditions, both RCMP and EMS have issued reminders to the public to drive slowly and safely. EMS responded to over 40 collisions in and around Calgary, including another fatality at 88th Street and Stoney Trail, and have advised drivers to avoid any non-essential travel. If you have to leave the house, EMS recommends increasing your following distance, decreasing your speed, and ensuring your vehicle is fully prepared for highway winter driving conditions.

Cpl. Fedrau echoed that advice.

"Take cautions during the winter driving season. We've had some really good weather but with the change in weather with snow patterns and stuff, just slow down, take your time and try to arrive safely."
