Roads are expected to be busy this weekend as thousands of Albertans hit the road for the Easter long weekend.

RCMP in Alberta are reminding you to be “eggs- careful if you’re hopping down the road”.

Mounties are asking people up, slow down and keep their cellphones in their pockets or bags.

“Give yourself some extra time on the highway, reduce your speed,” said Constable Mike Hibbs with the RCMP.

“If you need to set your GPS, your radio stations, or if you have kids in the car you need to keep them occupied and make sure they have what they need so it’s not distracting as you head down the highway.”

If the Easter Bunny brings you any treats Cst. Hibbs said not to leave them in plain sight in your vehicles, otherwise, it may put you at great risk of a vehicle break-in.

RCMP will be conducting check stops throughout the weekend and remind drivers alcohol screening is now mandatory. Cst. Hibbs said drivers should be planning a safe way home if they plan on drinking.

“Don’t put all your eggs in one basket, make sure you have a designated driver if you are planning on indulging with your loved ones,” said Cst. Hibbs. “Have a safe ride home, an UBER, a taxi, or a designated driver.”

Last year during the Easter long weekend two people lost their lives and 19 people were injured in collisions on Alberta Highways.
