Alberta RCMP is gearing up for National Road Safety Week from May 15th to the 21st.

RCMP say that the dates were strategically chosen due to the Victoria Day long weekend typically marking the "start of summer".

Cpl. Chris Warren, Media liaison for the RCMP says this week couldn't come at a better time.

"This typically marks the season of summer road travel for Albertans so the RCMP and road sheriffs are going to try and increase their visibility on the roads and curb some of those bad habits."

As part of the campaign, RCMP officers are going to be setting up check stops at strategically selected locations across Alberta to curb the behaviours that put people on the road most at risk. Drug and alcohol, distracted driving, aggressive driving and failure to use seatbelts.

The RCMP have given some tips for safe trips and they include wearing seat belts at all times, driving within the allowed speed limits, never driving while impaired or using your phone.
