After an incident at the Chinook Winds Skate Park last week, RCMP are urging you to use caution when posting content on Social Media.

Following the altercation at the skate park, many Social Media groups in Airdrie were flooded with comments, some showing support for the victim in the incident, while others were negative and misleading.

Cst. Dan Martin with the Airdrie RCMP said that sites like Facebook and Twitter can benefit Police when it comes to investigations.

“Social Media is definitely a good tool for Police. You can find a lot of information about what’s happening on Social Media, you can find out a lot of information about people. Social Media is a great tool for Police and investigation involving criminal matters.”

However, Martin acknowledged that Social Media can also hinder their work and spread misinformation.

“We have to examine the facts and try to extract as much evidence as we can. We try to get unbiased information, untainted information. Information on Social Media may not be the truth, may be quite far from the truth and get quite distorted and embellished in a hurry.”

As with any information spread on Social Media sites, you need to use caution when posting or reading the online content.

“Just be careful when Police are conducting an investigation into something like this. They have to be mindful of what you say or even what you post, posting pictures or posting a comment or opinion might influence another person’s evidence or story.”

In regards to the incident at the Skate Park, RCMP said it is still under investigation.
