It rained and it poured last weekend, so much so that Airdrie and Calgary broke rainfall records.

“Rainfall on June the 23rd historically was 24.6 millimetres back in 1972,” says Environment Canada Meteorologist Dan Kulak, “This year on June 23rd, Calgary Airport reported twenty-seven millimetres on that particular day.”

Kulak goes on to say that the record only hit Saturday as the rest of the weekend saw little to no rain.

With Airdrie and Southern Alberta well into Thunderstorm season, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if more downpours came to the area.

“All you need is one set of slow-moving storms and in a couple hours you can end up with 50, 60 70 millimetres sometimes,” says Kulak, “This past weekend, where I am, in my backyard the rain gauge showed 25 millimetres in one hour.”

Of course with thunderstorms comes more than just rain.

“We are known for having big storms in Alberta,” says Kulak, “Southern Alberta and the Calgary area generally gets the hail variety when it does come through but certainly some big rains can come along as well.”

According to Environment Canada, Airdrie and the surrounding areas won’t see any more rain until the start of the weekend on Friday.
