On Sunday (May 7), Airdrie's Abigayle Clarke was one of the recipients of the Great Kids Award handed out by Children's Services Minister Danielle Larivee.

"It was really nice, cause they had stars hanging from the roof and they had a glowing curtain behind the stage, and you would sit on the chairs in front and then you would walk up and then they'd give you the award," said the nine year old Clarke, who was recognized for a run she originally organized for her classmates in the spring of 2016.

After watching several family members struggle with illness, Clarke decided she was going to do something about it.

"There's a disease in my family called pulmonary fibrosis, and I love to run so I made a run called the Clarke Family Run, and my aunt and uncle nominated me and I got the award."

A few months later, the Clark Family Run joined with the Mayor's Run, allowing Clarke to raise more awareness and funds for pulmonary fibrosis.

"I think we raised $6,000, somewhere in between there."

Clarke said when she found out she was being recognized with a Great Kids Award, she was excited and proud of herself. She plans on organizing the run again this year.
