If you are worried about your vehicle getting broken into, RCMP say the easiest way to prevent it, is to lock it up.

"Vehicle break-ins that have damage are extremely rare. Meaning, we're not seeing a lot of damaged doors or vehicles pried open. What we're seeing is, vehicles that are left unlocked, individuals are just a crime of opportunity, going vehicle to vehicle and opening doors," said Cst. Jason Curtis.

Ensuring there are no valuables left in your vehicle and locking it up are the best forms of prevention.

If you do witness an individual breaking into your vehicle, Cst. Curtis said to contact the RCMP as soon as possible.

"We do not encourage people to engage those individuals because this is a person who fully understands that what they're doing is illegal, it's wrong, and they could face negative consequence from that. So, you can't really predict how the person is going to react if they're interrupted," he said.

If you are able to get a photo or video of the individual who is breaking into your vehicle, Cst. Curtis added that it goes a long way towards helping out the RCMP investigating.

"If they can do it safely without exposing themselves to harm, definitely, but we don't want anyone putting themselves in any position for potential danger or injury."
