Yesterday (November 16), Alberta Premier Rachel Notley officially called a by-election for the riding of Calgary-Lougheed.

The provincial riding has sat empty since November 1st, when MLA Dave Rodney stepped down to allow newly elected UCP Leader Jason Kenney to run.

Kenney won't be the only Party Leader to seek the seat. Earlier today Liberal Leader David Khan announced he will run as that party's candidate.

Khan, who was elected the Alberta Liberal leader on June 4th, has not officially held a seat in the legislature. David Swann remains the only Liberal MLA in government.

Dr. Phillip van der Merwe was announced as the candidate for the Alberta NDP. The Alberta Party Caucus has not announced whether they will put a candidate forward.

As it stands in the Legislature, the NDP have 54 seats, the United Conservatives have 26, the Alberta Party have two and the Liberals hold one seat.

One seat is still claimed under the Progressive Conservative name and two MLAs are sitting as Independents.
