In an address to the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties (AAMDC) Fall Convention yesterday (November 17), UCP Leader Jason Kenney announced the creation of a Task Force on Rural Crime.

Airdrie MLA Angela Pitt will be a member of the task force, alongside Mike Ellis and Don MacIntyre. The three MLAs will also work with municipal and law enforcement officials.

"This is in response to the multiple cries across the province that we've heard in response to rising crime rates, not only in rural communities but quite honestly everywhere across the province," said Pitt.

Pitt said starting in January, the Task Force will travel to rural communities around the province to gain an understanding of problems faced by rural communities in Alberta.

"In the long term, we're looking to develop policy for not only our party to implement, but recommendations for the government in truly just being helpful in solving some of these problems."

Airdrie is not immune to rural crime. Pitt said she hears from her rural constituents that are concerned about an increase in crime.

"We've had constituents of Airdrie who have their shops on their acreages, on their own land, and while they're in the shower their workplace is getting robbed."
