With less than 30 days until Alberta's Carbon Tax comes into effect, you may be looking into a crystal ball to wonder how it will impact your family.

The Government of Alberta will be imposing a charge of $1.011 per Gigajoule of Natural Gas used, on top of other levies put on Gasoline, Diesel and Propane.

When it comes to the cost of your energy bills, some companies including Epcor recently mailed statements showing what the levy could look like, based on your last year of usage.

According to the Alberta Department of Energy, the average household uses around 10 GJ of Natural Gas a month, which adds an additional 10 dollars to your bill.

With talk of the Carbon Tax creating more financial burdens for Albertans, The opposition Wildrose Party is proposing a Referendum on the Levy.

"How do you feel about this Carbon Tax, do you think this actually going to change emissions...behaviour," says Chestermere-Rocky View MLA Leela Aheer, who also serves as the Shadow Minister of Energy.

"It has no direction at all as to where those tax dollars are going to go, it's a huge tax grab."

Aheer says that while households may not see a massive increase in their bills, other groups could be hit harder.

"There's a whole other layer that keeps getting left out of the discussion and that's school boards, non for profits, charities, all of these groups are not exempted from the carbon tax either."
