Some homes in Northwest Airdrie woke up without power this morning after an unplanned outage (June 12).

Alana Antonelli with Fortis Alberta said about 2,500 customers in areas such as Sagewood and Woodside were affected by the outage which began around 5:50am. Fortis was able to restore power to half of the area by 6:20am, and power was fully restored by 6:45am. At this time, the cause of the outage is unknown.

This was the third power outage in as many weeks. On May 27, an outage affected a large portion of Southwest Airdrie due to a problem with a switching cubicle. Another minor outage occurred last week on June 7 after a transformer blew, leaving some downtown businesses without power. Antonelli said the frequency of these outages is most likely coincidental, as Airdrie has newer electrical technology to ensure power can be restored quickly.
