Two Provincial Non-Profit groups have launched a petition asking for some Alberta Elections rules to apply to School Board elections as well.

Kids Come First and the Calgary Association of Parents and School Councils (CAPSC) want the Provincial Government to outlaw corporate and union donations to those running for School Board Trustees.

"There's a special relationship of trust between parents and the public and the school board," says Lisa Davis, Founder of Kids Come First, "It's very important that these trustee elections are to be free from third party influence of any kind."

The Alberta Government already put an end to these donations for Provincial Elections as part of Bill 1: The Act To Restore Democracy, back in the summer of 2015, but the move never applied to Municipal Elections.

Rocky View Schools has taken a step to encourage transparency in these elections by recently passing a Bylaw requiring candidates in the upcoming vote to disclose their campaign contributions.

Davis says this is a good step and hopes for more transparency across the Province.

"When it comes to elections of any kind we need maximum transparency and when you're talking about elections that impact small children, that need for transparency just increases exponentially."

The petition is available online and Davis hopes they'll receive enough support to send to the Legislature as soon as possible to come in effect for the elections in October.
