Nominations are now open for a provincial award that a young person from Airdrie was a winner of earlier this year.

The Great Kids Awards are presented to young leaders, aged 5 to 18, who have made a difference while overcoming challenging circumstances.

Nine year old Abigayle Clarke of Airdrie was presented with the award in May of this year by Danielle Larivee, Alberta`s Minister of Children`s Services.  Abigayle`s was one of 16 awards presented to youth across the province.

Nominations are now open for this year`s awards.

Last year awards were given to youth for a variety of inspiring reasons.  One young person mentored children with vision loss while being visually impaired.  Another helped classmates better understand cancer while experiencing the disease at a young age.

In Abigayle`s case, she organized and promoted a run to raise awareness and funds to combat Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, a rare lung disease that several members of her family have suffered with. Now, her run has joined the annual Mayor`s Run in Airdrie to raise even more funds to fight IPF.

After she won the Great Kids Award, Abigayle said, "It was really nice, cause they had stars hanging from the roof and they had a glowing curtain behind the stage, and you would sit on the chairs in front and then you would walk up and then they'd give you the award."

Over the past 17 years, 274 young people have been recognized as Great Kids.
