Since opening its doors in 2018, the New Horizon Mall near Balzac has struggled to fill its store spaces.

Now the businesses in it and the people behind it are hoping that a market that offers locally sourced fresh fruits and vegetables, ethnic specialties, bakery products, and artisan offerings will breathe new life into the mall.

The Prairie Horizon Fresh Market is expanding into 23,000 feet of space at the mall in phases early in the new year.  The Market has been open, weekends only, with a mini farmer's market but the new space will be permanent.

Owner Ken Aylesworth says the mall is a perfect location since there's nothing equivalent to it to serve the communities of north Calgary as well as Airdrie.  He says easy access and visibility from the QEII make it a desirable place for them to do business.

The mall currently has over 100 businesses with 26 more slated to open in 2020.  There are 500 units available.
