The Alberta government announced yesterday (Tuesday, February 20) that $11 million will be given to community EMS teams to hire more staff and expand current care teams but that funding will not include Airdrie.

The money was allocated to increase paramedic support to seniors and vulnerable Albertans where they live with in-home treatment.

“When we help Albertans avoid stressful trips to the emergency department, everyone wins. These paramedics are effective and compassionate frontline workers, helping Albertans get the right care at the right time, right in their own homes,” said Brandy Payne, Associate Minister of Health in a press release.

At this time, all the funds are being allocated to Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, Grande Prairie, Peace River, Medicine Hat and Lethbridge.

The communities that were selected for funding were based on the number of emergency department admissions related to continuing care facilities.
