As part of Fire Prevention week, students in grade five had the opportunity to be named Junior Fire Chief for the day.

Students were asked to write a 50 word essay on 'How I can keep my family fire safe,' and the top essays were submitted to the Airdrie Fire Department to select the winner.

10 year-old Bosco Joseph from Good Shephard was named the winner on Wednesday, October 12, earning him the opportunity to ride in the fire engine, eat lunch with the fire crew at Chinook Winds Fire Hall, earn his classmates a special fire safety presentation with special gifts, and last but not least, Bosco will ride in the fire engine during the Canada Day Parade in 2017.

While touring the fire hall, Bosco learned about fire pole safety, training areas used by firefighters, the special fire bell and the different parts of the fire engine.

Bosco was most excited to ride in the fire truck and participate in the school presentation.

"I was excited when I got to go to the gym and hear about the fire safety and winning," said Bosco.

On the ride to the station Bosco got to light up the truck lights and honk the horn, which was a huge thrill for the Junior Fire Chief.

With all this new knowledge, Bosco has plenty of ideas on creating a new safety plan for him and his family.
