Distracted driving continues to be a subject of debate.

In Quebec, transportation Minister Laurent Lessard is calling for the criminalization of distracted driving.

As for Airdrie, RCMP says distracted driving remains a concern.

"It's a priority for us, and has been very prevelant in our community, it's very dangerous, and RCMP encourage the public to leave the phone at home when driving." said Cst. Meghan Fillion, Airdrie RCMP.

Calgary Police Services reported that from officers handed out 3,774 tickets between January and end of July, which is down from 4,370 issued last year.

Currently, distracted driving is considered a provincial traffic violation. As of January 1st 2016, it carries a fine of $287 and 3 demerit points.

At this time, Ottowa says the Government of Canada has no plans to criminalize distracted driving.
