The summer months are made for enjoying the outdoors, and more often than not, residents will enjoy the warmer weather on their decks.

What many do not know, is that you are required to get a permit for some projects before you can begin construction.

"You don't always have to get a permit, you have to check with the City first, because there are certain rules on elevation, and railings, and things like that," said Mayor Peter Brown. "Just in case always call."

Unless your deck is less than two feet above the ground from top to bottom, you are required to get a permit prior to starting the work, and must have an inspection after it is completed.

Any enclosure or roof over a deck or patio requires permits as well.

Residents can refer to the 'building a deck brochure', which outlines the requirements for obtaining a permit, as well as the safety requirements you must follow in the construction of your deck.

For a copy of the most recent brochure, you must contact Building Inspections at City Hall.

To apply for a deck permit, residents are required to complete the accessory permit application form and submit it to Building Inspections as well.

All forms and information can be found on the City of Airdrie website.
