The NDP announced a new pilot day care program on November 15, which they hope could result in $25 a day childcare. The new program will begin by providing funding for 18 childcare centres across the province.

Angela Pitt, Wildrose MLA agreed that securing high quality childcare is an important concern, but expressed concern over the NDP's plan.

"Certainly one of those concerns being, like every other policy they've brought in, have they done an economic impact study?," said Pitt "This is a large chunk of money, we don't really know where it's going, and this is something that we're going to be watching closely."

Pitt also acknowledged the need for quality childcare in Airdrie.

"We do know that there is an expanded new day care facility that is going up here in Airdrie, and so obviously there is a need, there is a market to create and build a facility like that. I will be doing outreach to see how this impacts our community and I'm certainly open to feedback on how the people of Airdrie want me to proceed."

The NDP's program will start by supplying 18 childcare centres across the province grants up to $500,000 for the first year, with the possibility of two additional years of funding.

The selected childcare centres will not be announced until early 2017.
