When most children in elementary school tell you they finished a book it means they`ve coloured all the pages.

When the students in last year`s Grade Five class at Muriel Clayton School in Airdrie tell you they finished a book, it means they completed writing a novel and on Thursday (October 5) at the Rocky View School board meeting the students were recognized for their efforts.

Teacher Nick Stabler`s class wrote the novel titled "One Way There, No Way Back" about a Syrian refugee who comes to Canada and the challenges he faces in this new country.

Stabler says the experience of writing a novel was great for his students, and being recongized by RVS was also thrilling.  "I think it's really exciting.  They did such a great job and it's neat to be showcased this way for them."

Stabler says this is the second time the students at Muriel Clayton have written a book.   He hopes it's something they can continue in the future.

"I hope so.  It's a lot of work but it's a really worthwhile prject.  This is the second time we've done a book but this one turned out a lot better just because of the depth of understanding the kids learned about other places in the world."

The novel was published last June.
