On Monday (February 27), Minister of Education David Eggen called for students from around the province to apply for the Minister's Youth Council.

"The Minister's looking for 32 junior high and senior high students from around the province," explained Rocky View Schools Superintendant Greg Luterbach. "He's looking for a representative sample, and I think our students in Rocky View can talk about the experiences they're having in their own schools."

Students on the Minister's Youth Council are required to attend three meetings in Edmonton, where they will discuss education in the province. Luterbach says the council is a great way for students to form connections and get early exposure to government. According to Luterbach, the students don't just sit around and give input; they are also given tasks to complete.

"They might be acting as a planner, an advisor, a researcher, a respondent, a facilitator. All different roles that the Minister is hoping that these 32 students from around the province can help provide some input back into and shape education moving forward."

Luterbach says he is most excited that students, including those in Rocky View, have an opportunity to shape the future of education in Alberta. He was clear that anyone on the youth council is not a representative of the school division or their school, but simply of themself.

"Students are free to apply. They don't need to be nominated by a teacher or anything like that. Anybody can apply. There's a May 5 deadline, and there's a package they need to fill out and send in."

Interested students can apply here.
