Shoppers Drug Mart, Canada's largest pharmacy chain has recently applied to become a distributor for medical marijuana.

The pharmacy chain believes that by allowing medical marijuana to be dispensed through a pharmacy, it would increase access, safety, quality, and security for Canadians who use the drug as medical therapy.

"We have applied to be a licensed producer strictly for the purposes of distributing medical marijuana," said Tammy Smitham, Vice President, External Communication in an email. "We have no intention of producing medical marijuana but we do want the ability to dispense medical marijuana to our patients in conjunction with counseling from a pharmacist."

With four Shoppers Drug Mart locations currently in Airdrie, multiple options will be available to fill your prescription once the application has been approved.

Smitham is hopeful that the Government of Canada will embrace the opportunity to enhance patient care.
