An Airdrie man begins a long walk home today (June 26) in an effort to raise funds and awareness for mental health issues.

Mike Loughman set out Saturday morning to drive to High Level to start a walk of over 1,000 km this morning that will take him back to Airdrie by the end of July, in what he's calling "Mike's March for Mental Health."

Loughman's send off included Mayor Peter Brown, Councillors Allan Hunter and Fred Burley, the Titus's from the Thumbs Up Foundation and supporters and friends.

Loughman said he was feeling "great, nervous and excited" as he readied to begin his journey.  Loughman is not just trying to raise awareness about depression and mental health issues, which affect one in five Canadians, he's also trying to raise money for Thumbs Up and the Defeat Depression Campaign.

"$20,000 I'm trying to raise for Thumbs Up and the Defeat Depression Campaign.  I'm also trying to bring attention to the Action North Recovery Centre as well. They saved my life."

Loughman, who was addicted to alcohol and drugs, said the first time he went to recovery it was to the Action North Centre in High Level.

"I had a first hard week, wanted to leave but they showed that they truly cared and they were able to dig down deep and find out what was really affecting me and I've been sober since October 10th, 2014."

Loughman was also diagnosed with several mental health issues about four years ago. He began taking medication and seeing a therapist regularly. He said for the first time in his life he was able to find happiness and manage his life.

While walking 1,000 km in a month would be challenge enough for most people, Loughman is adding a twist. He'll be walking with a five pound ball and chain attached to his leg, which symbolizes his personal struggles with depression, addictions and mental health.

His goal is to walk 30 to 40 km per day and make it back to Airdrie by the end of July.  His friend Darren Hood is on the trip with Loughman to serve as support driver and moral support.
