Airdrie Rural RCMP have charged a Calgary man after a serious collision that occurred last Wednesday (August 23).

Police, along with Rocky View Fire Services and EMS, were dispatched around 9:30pm to the scene of the collision on Country Hills Boulevard, east of the Calgary city limits.

According to the RCMP, preliminary investigations revealed that 41 year old Jeffrey Smith, traveling westbound in a red SUV at high speeds, tried to pass a semi truck and trailer while it was unsafe to do so. Smith's vehicle collided head-on with a smaller car driven by a woman in the opposite direction.

Stars Air Ambulance was summoned to transport the injured woman to hospital, where she currently remains.

Smith has now been charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, refusal to provide a sample of breath and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm. He was released by Police on a promise to appear at Provincial Court in Airdrie on October 5.
