The need for more affordable seniors housing has led to a major renovation at an Airdrie facility.

Luxstone Manor is undergoing renovations to create 30 new affordable studios for seniors.  Karim Daya, the President of the Luxstone Manor Ownership Group says they're filling a need for housing that's more affordable for seniors.

"It is important to serve the public, to serve seniors, to have more affordable studios and have a lifestyle where they can live at a more affordable price."

Luxstone opened in 2009.  Since then, they've found they had a surplus of one bedroom suites and a waiting list for the 23 studios that were available. The renovation is taking 15 one bedroom suites and converting them to 30 studios.  "That's why we're doing the renovation, to meet that demand of having more affordable studios," says Daya.

The renovation started in January and is now about 50 per cent complete.  The completion and occupancy date is scheduled for May.

"When Luxstone was thinking of the project, it was important that it be done by a local contractor", says Daya,  "We selected BMP Construction Management, they're a local Airdrie contractor.  It was important to us to use a local contractor to do the work."

Once the renovation is complete, it will bring the number of suites available at Luxstone Manor to 109.

With more and more seniors looking for affordability when it comes to their housing needs, Daya thinks it just makes sense to make more affordable units available saying that the new units start at $1,850 a month.
