If he wins a seat on City Council in the October 16th municipal election, Tim Lowing may be able to bring a little levity to council meetings.

Before he was 20, Lowing was a standup comedian who toured comedy clubs across Canada.  Now he works as a component repair machinist with Trans Canada Turbines and, come October, he hopes to join Airdrie city council.  Lowing felt the time was right to take the plunge.

"I just want to help.  It's something I've thought about throughout my life.  People make these suggestions through conversations but I never thought I was ready.  I just felt like there was a ton of stuff going on, and then I realized, you know what, I always have a ton of stuff going on.  I thought, you know what, this is the time.  I love Airdrie.  I think it's a special little place, and I've lived in a few places in Canada and I think this is a great place.  If I can be part of helping Airdrie make some decisions and progress I want to do that."

Lowing is a survivor of domestic violence and wants to make the issue one of his primary platforms.  "I think we have some social issues we have to address.  Obviously we have a domestic violence problem that's surging pretty hard and we seem to have some obstacles to getting these people some help.  The domestic issue in Airdrie translates always to kids.  There's a lot of kids that are caught in the middle of all that and I was one of them so I can understand and relate."  Lowing wants to see a shelter built in Airdrie and he wants it to be gender neutral.

Lowing says so far his campaign is getting a very positive response from the people of Airdrie.  "I'm basically doing personal sit downs with people.  I've basically invited Airdrie to get in touch, email, phone.  Let's say hello, let's have a cup of coffee, and it's working.  People are reaching out and it does sound like this city wants some change.  I think around 20,000 people voted in the last election .  It might be hard to talk to 20,000 folks, but I sure would like to try."

Lowing realizes that being on City Council means you're part of a team.  "I think that people need to know if they're getting into this that you're really not going to be in charge of everything.  You're going to be part of a collective in the decision making process.  I think that's really important to know and accept going in.  There's some stuff that's very important to people in Airdrie, from downtown to transportation to the shelter.  These things are critical and I think we have to go through the process and evaluate everything and start putting some logical and common sense to the process."
