Deputy Mayor Fred Burley has served on City Council since 2002, and now he's ready to make the next step.

Burley kicked off his campaign for Mayor yesterday, with an announcement in Nose Creek Park. Burley has had a front row seat from which to watch local leadership, and he plans to capitalize on that experience.

"I've served with three different mayors and twelve different Councillors, and I think I've picked a lot from each of them over the years. The mayors were a very diverse group, from Dan Oneil to Linda Bruce and Peter Brown, and my goal is to take a little bit from each of them and put it into who I am."

Burley's platform focuses on four main issues.

"My main goals revolve around business attraction and retention, infrastructure needs - the 40th Avenue overpass; a new, hopefully multi-use library; possible west side recreation facility- well managed finances to maintain what we have now and plan for the future, and to continue to build on our inter-governmental relationships, which assist us in getting schools, overpasses and additional medical services."

Burley said that in the past, he did not feel he had sufficient experience to run for Mayor, but he now feels more confident in his abilities.

"I think I needed the experience dealing with the public on a day to day basis. Having a business at the same time meant I couldn't make that commitment. I've determined how to get around that now, basically my wife will run the business and we'll go from there. I just feel now is the time. If I'm going to do this, now is the time."
