Airdrie based organization Haiti Arise is heading back to Haiti to help with the devastation of Hurricane Matthew.

A team of Airdrie volunteers will fly out to help distribute essential resources, assisting the locals with the clearing of debris, and rebuilding homes and structures.

"I would say the devastation is greater than the earthquake," said Marc Honrat, CEO, Haiti Arise. "I was there when the earthquake happened, we had more people die from the earthquake but this hurricane affects a larger area."

As the hurricane moves on through the Atlantic, the death count in Haiti is above 800 people.

The volunteers will head to a base in Grand-Goave, Haiti, and area which has seen much of the destruction.

Currently, 10 shelters are providing shelter to 604 displaced people. 539 homes have been destroyed, and 1,749 more are damaged.

"This is where my heart is, this is where I come from, this is where I grew up." said Honrat.

One of the biggest problems that Haitians will face is food. In Grand-Goave, there has been 170 goats, 4 cows, 7 donkeys, 1 horse and 3 pigs killed.

Haiti Arise is seeking more volunteers to head over to Haiti for 10 days. If you aren't able to make the trip, you can still help here at home by donating toiletries or money.
