The communities of Chestermere and Didsbury were in the dark on March 25th, but please don't think of that as a bad thing.

Both communities finished in the top ten of Fortis Alberta's Earth Hour Challenge.  Earth Hour took place from 8:30 to 9:30 pm on March 25th when people were asked to reduce their energy consumption to shine a light on climate change.

29 communities within Fortis Alberta's service territory participated in the challenge to see which one could reduce their energy usage by the greatest amount compared to the same hour on the previous Saturday.

Chestermere finished in seventh place while Didsbury came ninth.

The tiny village of Longview won the challenge and the $5,000 grant that goes with it by reducing their consumption by 31 per cent.

Corporate Communications Advisor for Fortis Alberta Natasha Russell congratulated all the communities that took part in the challenge.  She says, "With the Earth Hour Challenge we were able to bring awareness to the importance of being mindful of the energy we use."
