One year ago today, Rebecca Shuttleworth, 22, entered into the Calgary Stampede's first-ever poster competition.

A year later, the young Balzac resident came out on top. Shuttleworth's art will be the official poster for the 2019 Calgary Stampede and is already featured on their website. The victory has also rewarded her with a $10,000 scholarship.

Shuttleworth joined more than one hundred other applicants in this competition, all Alberta residents aged 15-25.

"From the top one hundred, they narrowed us down to the top thirty. Then we had to do a workshop as well as a live art session for them, then they narrowed us down to the top eight. About a month ago, I found out I was the winner. I wasn't allowed to tell anyone until yesterday at the unveiling," Shuttleworth explains.

"When I first told my family that I was the winner, they were so extremely excited. When I phoned my mom, all of a sudden the other end of the phone went quiet, and I'm like, 'Oh no, she's crying' and then sure enough she started talking a few seconds later and she said 'Why did you have to tell me this in a public place?'"

The young artist was inspired by one of Samantha Callioux's photographs, and used her own unique style and interpretation to produce the winning piece.

"I come from a farming background so all of my artwork is inspired by the culture and western lifestyle."

Shuttleworth is currently studying Agronomy at the University of Saskatchewan and will be graduating in April of 2019. She hopes to work in that field of study, with crops and helping out farmers. She also hopes to continue growing as an artist.

With this accomplishment already under her belt, Shuttleworth undoubtedly has a bright future ahead in her journey as an artist.
