It seems every other week there's a new food recall.

Over the last few months frozen vegetables, sunflower seeds and chocolate milk have been recalled due to listeria.

Food safety recall specialist, Fred Jamieson, says that one of the major issues is the listeria bacterial is a pathogen and grows in refrigerated temperatures.

"Bacteria can actually grow in refrigeration and so many of our kind of ready to eat products that we consume are refrigerated and therefore it does present a unique problem."

Jamieson also says the reason the first outbreak of frozen vegetables was so widespread in North America was because they're used in so many different products.

"As you can imagine the frozen vegetables you have those being integrated into so many different types of frozen vegetable products, they're made in the United States but can be imported into Canada"

He also adds that Listeria is very common and can be found in many other foods such as soft cheeses and fermented meats.

The symptoms range from a sudden fever, chills, severe headache, vomiting and other fly-type symptoms.
