The Airdrie Lioness Club were out and about yesterday (June 27), delivering cheques to two local organizations.

First, the Lioness Club stopped at the RCMP building to give a $500 donation to Airdrie and District Victims' Assistance Society (ADVAS). In the "Soft Room", three members presented a cheque to Executive Director Angela Wright. Wright said they would use the money to restock the room.

"Usually domestic violence victims are who we meet in this room, so I think we'll use the funds and replenish some of our movies, our books, our toys that we have in here for children."

Wright explained that most of the toys and books they have are second hand, and some of the movies and even their TV is starting to not work so well.

Lioness President Rhonda Auclair explained that the mission of ADVAS aligns with the club's mandate to support and give back to the community.

"They really do fulfill that need when there is a crisis in a family, in order to help those that are in need."

Next, the Club traveled to the Airdrie Food Bank, where they presented at $5,000 donation to Executive Director Lori McRitchie and General Manager Quinn Donaldson. McRitchie explained that the money would be used to purchase milk for their hampers.

"We offer milk to every hamper recipient. We give two litres of milk per person per hamper. So, for instance, if there were five people in the family, they would get ten litres of milk to last them a week. That's what this money will be used for."

The Food Bank facility does not currently have enough space to store milk, so instead, they will partner with local stores and give out milk vouchers with each hamper.

Sharon Uhrich with the Lioness Club explained why she thinks teaming up with the Food Bank is so important.

"Giving back to the community is what we want to do, and I think because the Food Bank is so integral in our community, it's a great partnership."

The Lioness Club will hand out two more cheques tomorrow to the Boys & Girls Club and to the Festival of Performing Arts.
