Canada Learning Code Week started yesterday (June 1), and the Airdrie Public Library has a number of events going on as part of the week.

Marilyne Aalhus, Fund Development and Marketing Coordinator with the Library, told us what the week is all about.

"It's an initiative that thousands of Canadians across the country will be learning from beginner levels to really experienced coding, and just learning more about the joy of being involved in new technology."

Aalhus said the events this week are a key way for the Library to engage with Airdrie's youth. They often hear that youth want to learn more and do more involving technology.

"We're also aware of the trends, and we want to continue to engage with youth and all of those who are moving towards the digital world and digital literacy. It's everywhere around us."

One of the key offerings from the library is coding lessons for youth, which will run every Thursday for the rest of the month. The first class went yesterday.

Aalhus also highlighted that the Library believes digital literacy is for everyone, not just youth. Since it is a type of literacy, Aalhus said it is something the Library wants to promote.

"All literacies are important in the library. We are definitely technology leaders. We're very proud to educate the public and our patrons about amazing technology that's available to them."

Canada Learning Code Week runs until June 8.
